"We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it."
Environmentalism, sometimes called Green Politics, is an non-quadrant ideology used to represent a range of ideologies which fall under the belief that nature should be a significant factor in deciding public policy, be it increasing recycling, decreasing CO2 emissions, or stopping water pollution, etc.
Beliefs
While there are many beliefs that are held by different environmentalists, there are four core beliefs held by those who support green politics. Those beliefs are
ecological wisdom,
grassroots democracy,
social justice, and
non-violence.
Variants
Blue Environmentalism
Blue Environmentalism or Aqua-Environmentalism is an ideology concerned about the environment of the ocean. They advocate for removal and prohibition of all single use plastic and the halt of releasing toxic chemicals in the ocean. Other concerns of his might be to remove microplastics and other pollutants from the ocean and also rebuild decayed coral reefs. Blue Environmentalism believes that the main concern of the government should be the protection of water bodies and their ecosystems. Also, people who throw toxic objects in the water, or start fishing where it is not allowed, or fish in a way that is not allowed, should be discouraged from doing so or punished. People who take care of the oceans and clean them should be supported and even rewarded. Two of the main objectives of blue environmentalists are removal of microplastics and reconstruction of decayed coral and fish populations.
Bright Green Environmentalism
Bright green environmentalism is an environmental philosophy and movement that emphasizes the use of advanced technology, social innovation, eco-innovation, and sustainable design to address environmental challenges. This approach contrasts with more traditional forms of environmentalism that may advocate for
reduced consumption or a return to
simpler lifestyles. According to Ross Robertson "Bright green environmentalism is less about the problems and limitations we need to overcome than the "tools, models, and ideas" that already exist for overcoming them. It forgoes the bleakness of protest and dissent for the energizing confidence of constructive solutions" this shows how Bright Green Environmentalism differs from traditional and more moderate forms of environmentalism.
Light Green Environmentalism
Light Green Environmentalism is a form of
environmentalism that while is chiefly focused on environmental issues, they believe it is a personal responsibility, this means that they do not favour the
government intervening
in the economy to prevent climate change. Instead they would prefer incentives and campaigns to promote changes in lifestyles to avoid a climate crisis. However Light-Green environmentalism is distinct from
Greenwashing as they genuinely wish to make a difference to the climate but believe environmentalism works better as an individual choice rather than top down enforcement.
Dark Green Environmentalism
Dark Green Environmentalism believes that environmental problems are an inherent part of
industrialized,
capitalist civilization, and seek radical political change. Dark greens believe that currently and historically dominant modes of societal organization inevitably lead to
consumerism,
overconsumption, waste, alienation from nature and resource depletion. Dark greens claim this is caused by the emphasis on economic growth that exists within all existing ideologies, a tendency sometimes referred to as growth mania. The dark green brand of environmentalism is associated with ideas of ecocentrism, deep ecology, degrowth, anti-consumerism, post-materialism, holism, the Gaia hypothesis of James Lovelock, and sometimes a support for a
reduction in human numbers and/or a
relinquishment of technology to reduce humanity's effect on the biosphere.
Personality
Environmentalism is portrayed as a stereotypical hippy pro-nature advocate who will behave accordingly, sometimes they may even be portrayed as "doomer" or a so-called "climate alarmist" and may be constantly terrified and worried over their own and others' carbon footprint.
