Narendra Modi

Hindutva is a authoritarian, culturally far-right, and ultranationalist ideology without any fixed economic system (although generally supports a militarized market economy with a heavy emphasis on industrialization and development). It believes that India is fundamentally a Hindu nation, an expansive state spanning all of Akhand Bharat (Undivided India), designed solely to protect and advance the political, societal, cultural, religious and economic interests of the Hindu community over all others. It promotes unflinching militarization in order for Hindus to secure their martial power and national pride, and often espouses reactionary beliefs.

Foundations

The original Hindutva ideology was formulated in the early 20th century. It was developed by Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, an Indian politician, activist and writer. Savarkar was influenced by Italian Fascism and German Nazism, along with other European fascist movements.

Nationalism

The Hindutva movement is based upon an extreme form of Hindu nationalism. Hindutva activists believe that India is a fundamentally Hindu nation, and for that reason, India must try to secure Hindu interests and put Hindus on a higher standard than others. Hindutva theorists also believe in a militant form of Cultural Nationalism, as they invoke the concept of Hindu culture, values, traditions, and heritage being threatened by an enemy force that looks to erase them. Most Hindutva theorists believe in Hindu superiority over other faiths.

Economics

Despite Hindutva having no fixed economic system, some Hindutva theorists, such as Modi, are economically liberal, holding strict anti-communist and anti-socialist views. But other Hindutva theorists are more neutral on socialism. Hindutva activists commonly call for industrialization and economic development.

Tradition

Hindutva is a reactionary modernist ideology, as it puts a heavy emphasis on restoring and preserving Hindu traditional values while advancing technologically.

Irredentism

Hindutva is an irredentist ideology that calls for India to launch a campaign of expansion in order to establish Akhand Bharat (Undivided India), a territorial concept that, if it were to be established, would require India to invade countries such as Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, and the Maldives. Hindutva activists justify these hypothetical campaigns of expansion by claiming that they are necessary in order to secure the national pride of Hindus.

Akhand Bharat Movement

A portion of Hindutva believes in the Akhand Bharat Movement, which is an irredentist sub-section that desires to create a centralized state that unites all territories that had in the past belonged to the Hindu civilization in order to restore the glory of ancient India.

"Liberal" Hindutva/Hindutva-Lite

The liberal Hindutva movement was crucial for modernizing and attempting to normalize Hindutva in Indian politics. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the co-founder of the BJP, claimed to have Hindutva liberal beliefs. He was eventually elected as Prime Minister, promoting right-wing populism, privatization of government-owned corporations, reducing government waste and trying to clean the environment, and encouraged foreign investments. His policies also included a tough on terror approach after various terrorist attacks, and after an extremist mob of Muslims burned down a train of Hindu pilgrims, he claimed that Muslims cannot live peacefully with others. Due to many innocent Hindus being killed in the train, many turned to Hindutva and rioted. These riots claimed many innocent Muslim lives, including those who denounced Islamic terrorism. Hindutva mobs burned down Muslim-owned shops, murdered and lynched Muslims in the streets, and looted/vandalized stores. The brutal communal violence was rarely denounced by Hindutva politicians. Vajpayee even tried to justify the violence by claiming it was "a response to jihadist aggression".

The Hindutva-lite is a group of Hindutva supporters, both online and in person, who strongly advocate for a Hindu state. They claim to be moderate and mainstream, yet hold the same values as many Hindutva militants and radicals. Hindutva lite wants to preserve the Earth, protect the economy, and keep India a "secular" country. Hindutva lite also greatly considers Gandhi to be an important Hindu cultural leader and activist, while at the same time, they support Gandhi's killer, Nathuram Godse. This itself shows the hypocrisy of Hindutva lite and how most of its rhetoric just does not make sense.

Bharatiya Janata Party

Philosophy

The official philosophy of the BJP is "Integral humanism," a philosophy first formulated by Deendayal Upadhyaya in 1965, who described it as advocating an "indigenous economic model that puts the human being at center stage, apart from being committed to Hindutva. The BJP's Hindutva ideology has been reflected in many of its government policies. It supports the construction of the Ram Temple at the disputed site of the Babri Mosque. However, they are somewhat moderate compared to other Hindu nationalist groups and parties.

Education

The education policy of the BJP-led government reorganized the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and tasked it with extensively revising the textbooks used in Indian schools. Various scholars have stated that this revision, especially in the case of history textbooks, was a covert attempt to "saffronize" Indian history. The NDA government introduced Vedic astrology as a subject in college curricula, despite opposition from several leading scientists.

Secularism

Taking a position against what it calls the "pseudo-secularism" of the Congress party, the BJP instead supports "positive secularism" Vajpayee laid out the BJP's interpretation of Mahatma Gandhi's doctrine of Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava and contrasted it with what he called European secularism. He had said that Indian secularism attempted to see all religions with equal respect, while European secularism was independent of religion, thus making the former more "positive". The BJP supports a uniform civil code, which would apply a common set of personal laws to every citizen regardless of their personal religion, replacing the existing laws that vary by religious community. Historian Yogendra Malik claims this ignores the differential procedures required to protect the cultural identity of the Musl*m Muslim minority.

r/Chodi

r/Chodi was an ultranationalist Hindu subreddit banned in the year 2022, after the ban, several users migrated to Telegram, r/IndiaSpeaks, r/Indiadiscussion, and r/bakchodi. r/Chodi promoted Islamophobic and Christophobic speech, in addition to hateful messages against LGBTs (transgenders included), sexist and misogynistic messages and other types of attacks on ethnic and religious minorities, use of misspelled sexual terms to circumvent the Reddit software. Their religious extremism and reactionaryism made the urban dictionary classify them as close to Islamic extremist groups such as ISIS.

Adityanathism

Yogi Adityanath is a Hindu monk and political leader who is the Chief Minister of Utter Pradesh. He has the image in India as a nationalist and conservative, but his views tend to be even more right-wing. He is the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini a youth religious group. Yogi Adityanath praised Donald Trump's travel ban on 7 Muslim countries, and proposed that India should do the same. Yogi has said controversial things in the past. He once said that if men adopt feminine traits they become gods, but if women develop masculine traits they become demons. He has constantly said that Hindu and Islamic cultures cannot coexist. Adityanath has also attemped to curb 'religious conversions in the name of love' by passing anti - conversion laws to prevent quote unquote 'Love Jihad'. He has also cracked down hard on beef production and cow smuggling. Adityanath has also taken a tough on crime stance, banning tobacco products like paan in government buildings and suspending corrupt or 'black sheep' police officers from the Uttar Pradesh police.

Marathi Regionalism

A far-right Marathi ideology. They are essentially Ethnonationalists and Cultural Nationalists to the point of Fascism. They follow the ideology of Hindutva, as they maintain heavy Marathi-Hindu nationalist views. Many of them have Marathi traditionalist values and want to give more power to the Indian state of Maharashtra. They want Maharashtra to return to their 'golden age' of imperial tactics. Various political parties, such as the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena promote Marathi power.

Abhinav Bharat

Essentially a terrorist group, this Hindutva militia was initially founded by Savarkar in the early 1900s. It died out, but eventually was restored by former military officer, Major Ramesh Upadhyay, in the early 2000s. This group was responsible for the 2008 Malegaon bombing, and even tried to assassinate the leader of the RSS, who they deemed was not Hindutva enough. The terrorist group was responsible for countless other bombings and attacks with many civilian casualties, such as the Ajmer Sharif Dargah blast, 2007 Samjhauta Express bombings, the Mecca Masjid bombing, and more.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)

The RSS is a paramilitary organization that was founded by K. B. Hedgewar in 1925. Before WW2, the RSS admired the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, and the Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini. They liked Hitler's ideas of racial purity, but during WW2, they changed their stance on European far-right leaders. RSS leaders were supportive of the Jewish State of Israel, and they admired the Jewish people for maintaining their religion, culture, and language. The RSS has clashed with Muslims in the past. During the Partition of India, the RSS helped Hindu refugees, but they were also responsible for communal - violence against Muslims. They have strong Hindu nationalist views and have ties to the BJP.

Vishva Hindu Parishad

The Vishva Hindu Parishad is a far-right Hindu ultranationalist group that promotes Hindu militancy and has been called out for their violence against Muslims. They are against Muslims, Christians, and communists. They are also against the caste system and cow slaughter. The VHP has done communal work and has provided social services, but they also have participated in the 2002 Gujarat riots against Muslims. Not only this, but VHP detests inter - religious love and often prevents Hindu - Muslim marriages from happening. They consider Muslims who try to marry Hindu girls, as terrorists trying to convert young women. They call this the Love Jihad Theory.

Savarkarism

The founder of Hindutva was Savarkar. He was an Indian ultranationalist, and wanted to make India a 'pure Hindu nation'. Savarkar was actually an atheist and thought of Hinduism as a cultural and political ideology. He originally had ideals of fighting off the British in India, but then adopted hostile and reactionary views toward Muslims and those who were not Hindu. He laid down the foundation for various Hindutva groups and Hindu nationalist organizations. He longed to make India a Hindutva-based superpower that dominated the region. In his book, Hindutva, first published in 1923, he called for the creation of a Hindu state and looked forward to the fulfillment of the "Zionist Dream" of Palestine becoming a Jewish state.

Godseism

Godse was the assassin of Gandhi. He disliked the fact that Gandhi was tolerant of Muslims, hence why he shot and killed the political leader. Godse was a member of the Hindutva political party Hindu Mahasabha and the paramilitary group known as the R.S.S. He wanted India to become a fascist state, similar to that of Fascist Italy. He was a big follower of Hindutva militants and theorists.

Savitrism

Savitrism is an ideology based on the beliefs of Savitri Devi Mukherji, a French-born Greek-Italian fascist, Nazi sympathizer, writer, and spy who served the Axis powers by committing acts of espionage against the Allied forces in India.

From 1941 to 1945, Savitri committed acts of espionage against the Allies in the British Raj (British-occupied India). She was a member of the Sicherheitsdienst, the intelligence agency of the Schutzstaffel. Following the end of World War II, Savitri became a high-profile figure within the neo-nazi underground. During this era, she promoted ecology and environmentalism, which inspired eco-fascism within the 2010s alt-right movement. Personally, Savitri was a radical vegetarian and animal rights activist, believing that humans do not stand above animals and that people who didn't respect nature or animals deserved execution. Her ecologist views are seen in her 1959 book The Impeachment of Man.

Aside from her environmental views, Savitri is perhaps best known for her influence in Esoteric Fascism; in her 1958 book The Lightning and the Sun, she claimed that Adolf Hitler was an avatar of Vishnu, a major God in Hinduism.

Additionally, Savitri co-founded the World Union of National Socialists, a neo-nazi organization, in 1962.

Personality

He is a very strict and conservative Hindu. He often fights and argues with Muslims, whether they are conservative or progressive. He usually thinks that people who eat beef should be killed, and can be very antagonistic towards Muslims, Sikhs, and sometimes Christians. He hangs out with Hindu Theocracy, who thinks that he is too extreme. He often insists that Hinduism is the same as Hindutva, even though they are not. He has many outbursts in a day and often screams "Jai Hindutva" and "Jai Hindu Rashtra"
