Monarcho-Syndicalism is a authoritarian left, culturally right version of National syndicalism that advocates for a monarchy with a strong focus on unionizing the proletariat while opposing democracy.

    History

    Édouard Berth

Édouard Berth started his political career by contributing to Le Mouvement socialiste journal. Although the journal was itself revolutionary syndicalist, Berth was active supporter of reformist Alexandre Millerand until 1902. However later, Berth's views gradually evolved towards revolutionary syndicalism. In 1909, he started to oppose democracy moving towards monarchism. Two years later he co-founded Cercle Proudhon. His views synthetized corporatism with revolutionary syndicalism.

He supported Bolshevik revolution in 1917. Three years later he joined French Communist Party. However, he became disillusioned with communism and started to criticize Stalin's policies as well as stalinist PCF. This made him re-join ranks of revolutionary syndicalist movement in 1936. He died three years later.

    Émile Janvion

Émile Janvion was a French politician and syndicalist activist. He was among the founders of Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT). From 1899, Janvion propagated anti-Semitic and anti-freemason views among the syndicalists. One year later, he was about to organize an Anti-Parliamentary Congress but it was banned by the government. Later, he co-founded the Anti-Militarist League.

In 1908, Janvion was one of the intellectuals who answered Georges Valois' call for a discussion about monarchism becoming a part of the syndicalist movement. Janvion was critical of republicanism, but he didn't support a monarchy either. However, monarchists helped him found the Terre Libre (Free Land) journal in 1909. It is said that Valois himself was funding the journal with help from Action Française movement. More left-wing members of AF published in Terre Libre.

During World War I, he condemned pro-peace feminist leaders, writing the "Le féminisme défaitiste" (Defeatist feminism) pamphlet. Janvion died on 21 July 1927 in Paris.

    Inejirō Asanuma

Inejirō Asanuma was a Japanese socialist politician. He was the founder of Japan Labour-Farmer Party. He founded the party as part of an effort to link urban workers' movement to rural peasant one. He was elected to the National Diet as member of Social Masses Party. During World War II, he joined Imperial Rule Assistance Association and supported Japanese war efforts. He supported Pan-Asianism, as he saw war in Asia as mean to liberate Asia from Western imperialism.

Immediately after the end of World War II, he founded the Japan Socialist Party (JSP). As politician, he cultivated an "everyman" image and lived modestly in public housing. Asanuma opposed remilitarization of Japan. In 1959, he expressed his support of communist China by giving a speech in Beijing and referring to America as "the shared enemy of China and Japan". JSP played crucial role in the protests against the United States–Japan Security Treaty. Said protests were followed by resignation of Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi.

On 12 October 1960, a televised political debate was taking place. Asanuma was murdered by young ultranationalist Otoya Yamaguchi.

    Portuguese National Syndicalism

The Order of Christ Cross, used as the symbol of the National Syndicalist Movement

National Syndicalism in Portugal was characterized by the condemnation of the totalitarianism present in German and Italian societies during the 1930s, its leader, Francisco Rolão Preto, declared during a banquet that the National Syndicalist Movement was "beyond democracy, fascism and communism". The National Syndicalist Movement had a strong Catholic inspiration, with the Order of Christ Cross being their symbol, they were very popular among university students and young soldiers. It endorsed Catholic social teaching, Christian personalism, integralism, municipalism and a restoration of the traditional monarchy and were opposed to communism and capitalism. Its members were also known as the Blueshirts, as they used blue shirts as uniforms.

Its leader, Francisco Rolão Preto declared on an interview to the United Press that:

"Fascism and Hitlerism are totalitarian, divinizers of the state and caesarists: we pretend to find in the Christian tradition of the Portuguese people the formula that allows the harmonization of the sovereignty of the national interest with the moral dignity of free men."

He criticized the Estado Novo for adopting a single-party system typical of fascism, which he hated, due to this criticism, the national syndicalist journal 'Revolução!' was suspended on 24 July. On November of the same year, the national syndicalists split, the majority decided to support Salazar and integrate the party with the União Nacional, abandoning the principles of partisan independence defended by Rolão Preto and Alberto Monsaraz.

On 10 July 1934, Rolão Preto was arrested and subsequently exiled and on 29 July of the same year, national syndicalism was forbidden by the Salazarists.

    Francisco de Barcelos Rolão Preto

Francisco Preto criticized Salazar's regime for being too moderate and encouraged it to turn corporatist model into syndicalist one. After fail of the revolt, he was forced into exile in Spain. During Spanish Civil War he supported Falangists.

After World War II began, he supported Axis powers hoping they will win. However, after the end of war he denounced fascism for its perceived compromises with bourgeoise. As years passed, he continued moderating his political views, eventually becoming supporter of Constitutional Monarchy and Christian Democracy.
