Not to be confused with
Bleeding-Heart Libertarianism.
"The United States should provide an annual income of $12,000 for each American aged 18–64, with the amount indexed to increase with inflation. It would require a constitutional supermajority to modify or amend. ... The poverty line is currently $11,770. We would essentially be bringing all Americans to the poverty line and alleviate gross poverty."
Social Libertarianism, abreviated to SocBert, is a civically libertarian, culturally left and economically variable (sub-ideologies ranging from
Center-Left to
Center-Right) ideology that advocates for a decentralized government with various forms of robust social welfare. SocBert differs from standard
Libertarianism as it holds both Negative liberty (i.e. freedom to do stuff) and Positive liberty (i.e. freedom from forces such as poverty, bad health, and pollution) to the same equally as important standard. However, despite the vast differences, they still tend to align with
Libertarianism on decentralization of the state, free-market economics and civil liberties. The core dividing factor being the ideologies belief in the state having a moral obligation to still provide basic welfare policies due to the SocBert concept of "Freedom from dominion" (Otherwise known as enforcing positive liberties). These social welfare policies often include
universal basic income,
negative income tax and various forms of basic market regulations such are environmental protection laws. Due to it being a relatively new ideology, Social Libertarians either support regular
social democratic economic polices (
Libertarian Social Democracy) or
social capitalism (
Yangism) in broader modern politics.
Furthermore, Most Social libertarians are against
foreign intervention because they have
non-interventionist beliefs based on
pacifism and
pragmatism. However, that isn’t always true, with
Andrew Yang endorsing for interventionists like
Chris Christie or
Dean Phillips, and
Mary Peltola voting to keep U.S. troops in Syria.
Beliefs
Social libertarianism is a political philosophy and ideological variant of
Libertarianism that likewise endorses individual liberties and limited government, however splinters from its parent ideology via the endorsement of a social market economy through culturally progressive reforms and decentralization. It is considered center-left to centrist within the context of the political spectrum however some sub-variants lean center-right. At it's core the philosophy plans the expansion of civil liberties and equal opportunities through a social safety nets and welfare. Most common policies Social Libertarians agree on are UBI (Universal Basic Income) or NIT (Negative Income Tax). However, other policies such as Geo-distributistism or Georgism are also agreed on by Social Libertarians but heaving debated on their alignment to individualism.
Core tenants of Social Libertarianism include:
Social-Market Economy & Welfare
As the ideologies core philosophical component that establishes its difference from general
Libertarianism, Social Libertarians argue that to advance the idea of the equal symbiosis of positive and negative liberties the state must provide some form social safety net. This is done as to prevent unlawful dominion over the individual, which defined by the ideology is the practice of ones freedoms being inhibited by factors which are out of their control. For example, the ideology argues that a person cannot be truly "free" if they actively being harmed by factors like poverty or environmental pollution which otherwise would not be a problem with the person having enough capital. Furthermore, this then falls in line with the idea of "actually existing capitalism" which states that true libertarianism cannot be fully implemented in modern economics as it has been for decades tainted by unnecessary government intervention. This in turn led to formation of various dominions which prevent a true meritocratic free market from flourishing, often leading to monopolies funded by subsidies or environmental disasters which harm the local population.
Henceforth to fix this, it's agreed that a Social-Market economic system is to be implemented to effectively cancel out the effects of unlawful dominion over the individual. However, there is an active debate whether the ideology within itself is a transitional stage to free-market libertarianism or an independent permanent ethos. This system, which combines tenants from free-market capitalism and social capitalism, provides enough regulation to establish both fair competition within the market with a robust social safety net. Other tenants include:
private property,
free trade,
free market,
market competition, mild to moderate
economic interventionism, and a
welfare state. To fund the social safety net, most Social Libertarians agree in Land Value Taxation, Government revenues from public enterprises, Value Added Taxation (Especially in
USA by
Yangism) and mild corporate regulations. The most well known welfare policies that Social Libertarians advocate for is
universal basic income or a
negative income tax, however some more left-leaning sub-variants would advocate for a more robust system intertwining Single Payer Healthcare, Universal Catastrophic Coverage, Free Public Education and in some instances paid-for social housing. The aim of the Welfare state or social-safety nets is not to subsidize complacency as most Libertarians would put it, but to ensure everyone has an equal starting line when participating in actually existing capitalism which often violates ones positive individual liberties and disallows fair competition.
Individual Liberty
Social Libertarians fundementally believe that Negative liberty and Positive liberty are equally important. Through this philosophy an ideal Social Libertarian government should provide basic necessities to guard people from domination whether that would be from poverty or damages to the environment. This therefore would be done through implementing necessary regulations which would act as barriers to prevent corporations from violating a persons liberty such as health regulations and union rights. Though, regulations that if present do not advance a individual liberty but are only market barriers are deemed unnecessary. This state intervention which otherwise is frowned upon in other
Libertarianism ideologies is justified via the philosophy of the equally important, Negative and Positive freedoms. This therefore still makes the ideology inheritely Libertarian as individual freedoms and rights are limited only when they violate others individual rights and freedoms (similar to
Civil Libertarianism). On the topic and discussion of social issues and dilemmas, Social Libertarians prefer active solutions. Mainly emphasizing that state intervention isn't actually effective if used without consideration, they prefer careful and moral approaches and policies which dont violate positive or negative rights such as decriminalizing "Victimless crimes", providing abortion rights and protecting the rights of minority groups and individuals such as LGBTQ peoples. This is in contrast to rather the dogmatic arguments of "state has no authority to intervention" like
right-wing libertarians often argue.
Decentralization
Decentralization or in some cases, confederation/federation is key to the idea of the social libertarian philosophy. It advocates for a decentralized small government like all
Libertarian ideologies which minimally interferes or does not at all interfere with the lives of a person outside of welfare, social safety nets and protecting individuals from dominion. However they are not to be confused with
anarchists as the a fundamental principle of social libertarian ideal is that a government must also exist in some capacity to provide these core tenants. This is often done via
Direct Democracy or in some instances
Semi-Direct Democracy, as this system maximizes freedoms and liberties whilst keeping state power over the individual, the economy and bureaucracy to a minimal. There are debates about modern examples of a similar system at play but most Social Libertarians agree that an ideal Social Libertarian government would be closely structured to the
Helvetic Model as seen in more particularly in Switzerland.
History
(WIP) Social libertarianism is not a "formal" ideology, since it lacks unifying doctrinal theory or a single founder. However, various 21st century figures could be considered social libertarians, combining the welfare state with minarchism. The movement was influenced by
Social Liberalism and
Libertarianism(In a large sense).
Variants
Yangism
Yangism is a economically center to center-right, culturally left-wing and civically libertarian-leaning ideology, based off the views of former
Democratic Party candidate and
Forward Party founder Andrew Yang.
Human-Centred Capitalism is a reformed version of
Capitalism which is geared towards maximising human well-being and fulfillment, instead of corporate profits. It also would replace several traditional economic metrics with an "American Scorecard".- Yang is well-known for his advocacy for Universal Basic Income (UBI). His most famous policy is Freedom Dividend, a $1,000-per-month UBI that is given to all US citizens aged 18 or older regardless of employment status, to help fight off job displacement from automation.
- In addition to UBI and human-centered capitalism, single-payer healthcare (Medicare for All) was a fundamental aspect of Yang's platform. Furthermore, he also added that he would "would keep the option of private insurance" as his goal was to "demonstrate to the American people that private insurance is not what [they] need" and that Medicare for All is "superior to [their] current insurance."
- Yang was opposed to making public colleges tuition-free, but did support investing in community colleges to drastically reduce their tuition and Student Loan forgiveness.
- However a slight deviation from common Social Libertarian ideas, Yang was known to support some forms of
foreign intervention such as combatting Russian Expansionism, however he favored more diplomatic approaches to solutions.
Libertarian Social Democracy
Libertarian Social Democracy, sometimes referred to as Left-Leaning Social Libertarianism is an economically center to center-left and civically libertarian ideology which is often erroneously called "Moderate Social Democracy". It constitutes of take the general principles of Social Libertarianism such as welfare, civil liberties & social-market economics and amplify them, often advocating for a more developed welfare state and robust selection of social safety nets. As all Social Libertarians they advocate for UBI or NIT however they also propose M4A, paid parental leave and childcare to expand the scope of the already robust welfare state all under a Libertarian government of no interference with the individual, some regulations and some taxation such as LVT or even in some instances, Progressive taxation. Moreover, they are known to support non-interventionist foreign policies and typically gravitate towards supporting general Social Democratic policies. Despite being described to be "statist" by more Right-Leaning Social Libertarians, they still constitute as a variant of Social Libertarianism due to their staunch commitment to a non-interfering libertarian government; something that Social Democracy does not follow. This means that Libertarian Social Democrats are strongly for civil liberties, unsure on tax & spend politics due to the inherent authoritarianism of taxes and staunchly anti-war. This can mean that Libertarian Social Democrats are
Third Way on economics but
further left on sociocultural and civic topics like war, liberty and statism.
Libertarian Paternalism
Libertarian Paternalism, or LibPat, is a
Libertarian ideology that revolves around the belief that private and public institutions should be able to influence choices and behavior, while still respecting freedom of choice.
Personality
SocBert ball is a very charitable, happy, energetic, and pro-freedom ideology. Although he likes many people, not many people like him back. He's too much of a "Socialist" for libertarians, so he's called a "fake libertarian" by LibRights. On the other hand, he's also called a "Libertarian Trojan Horse" by LibLefts. Usually, he hangs out with his mom, Social Democracy, his half-sister, Social Georgism, and his dad, Libertarianism every other weekend. His best friend is probably Nordic Model or Social Liberalism. He also likes to visit Helvetic Model's house.

Social Capitalism - My economic system. Capitalism has to be made to serve human ends and goals, rather than have our humanity subverted to serve the marketplace.
Liberalism - Civil liberties, democracy, progress and a free market are all mega-based!
Welfarism - Sweeeet humanitarianism! Welfare is indispensable for Positive liberty or Real Freedom.
Progressivism - Progression of civic rights of the individual is necessary for a truly libertarian society, and nearly all my supporters are culturally left! But why do you hate Yang so much? Also, I can't tolerate you trying to violate freedom sometimes.
Anti-Authoritarianism - Ooh, and who would I be without you?
Radicalism - I have succeeded your ideas in a morden way. I'm you in the 21st century.
Civil Libertarianism - An indispensable part of my theory. <3
Direct Democracy &
Semi-Direct Democracy - A more pure form of democracy where the public is given more power? BASED!
Technoliberalism - YANG GANG!
Bleeding-Heart Libertarianism - LIB UNITY! Free market and Social justice!
Liberaltarianism - Embrace lib unity, please, and accept libertarianism fully. But you're still cool. Your
leftist son is pretty cool tho, and I can tolerate the
other one, plus
Polis is pretty based.
Green Libertarianism - Although you are very stubborn in only wanting to regulate the economy for environmental reasons, many of my proponents support you and my libertarian-paternalistic tactics complement your goals perfectly.
Helvetic Model - You are a dream come true!
Nordic Model &
Social Liberalism - A slightly more moderate version of myself. It's closest to me in mainstream ideologies.
Ordo-Liberalism - A more right-fashioned version of the folks above, but we share many principles and his Social Capitalism is pretty based.
Steiner-Vallentyne School - Literally me, but with LVT.
Georgism - LVT is probably one of the best ways to fund UBI. Taxing unearned income is more effective than earned income.
Piratism - Great guy, we agree in a lot of issues.
Radical Centrism - "Not Left. Not Right. Forward." We need true reforms, not trapped on the left and the right.
Reformism - Same as above.
Neo-Enlightenment - Corporate UBI? Wow, that sounds weird, but it is still UBI...
Alaska - Thank you for electing
Mary Peltola and
Mike Gravel! Also, I love your Ranked-Choice Voting. Wdym you “got rid of all of those”?
Frenemies
Social Democracy - I love you mom, but not your bureaucracy and centralized government. I hope you don't go bad like
PatCon, please.
Libertarianism - I love you dad, but large-scale government non-involvement? Agree to disagree. Please accept that Positive Liberty or Real Freedom is also an important freedom.
Capitalism - I support free market in general, but it doesn't mean that I support laissez-faire. Also, I want to move away from today's capitalism and build a post-capitalist economy represented by NIT or UBI. We need
Human-Centred Capitalism for social justice and future.
Socialism - Well, your market varieties are all kinda cool. But because of you, I get called a socialist all the time. I'm NOT a trojan horse on the right. If VAT is funded for basic income, it's not a regressive tax that damaging to the poor. Also, NIT or UBI is the most benefical for the poor. Are you understand?
Distributism - Your economics are interesting, but all that statism and your very conservative social stances leave me quite worried.
Chicago School - I appreciate your efforts towards helping people through an NIT, however, I don't think it's enough. Also, too little government intervention in the economy! And why you despise my
poor brother like that? But I still think your economics aren't bad.
Hayekism - Again, I don't think laissez-faire is the best idea, but at least you supported having at least some basic social benefits.
Austrian School - Well, your love for freedom is based, but you're still too Capitalist and your loathe of welfare and rejection of equality is a no for me.
Keynesian School - I agree with a lot of your sentiments and you are well-intentioned, but you're too Statist sometimes.
Left-Wing Market Anarchism - An absolute lover of (non-capitalist) markets, and a very calm and well-versed lib-uitist, but I think he goes too far in proposing anarchism in the short term.
Left-Rothbardianism - Same as above. but
Roderick T. Long is pretty based.
Libertarian Socialism - You are one of the best socialists, no doubt, but I still think you are too radical. I agree to some extent that the current relationship between the boss and the worker is unfair, But I don't believe in workers' self-management. Rather, It's better to suppress the polarization of wealth and strengthen the bargaining power of workers through NIT or UBI.
Geosyndicalism - Same as above, but
Georgism and liberty are alright with me.
Representative Democracy - ¡Tira la palanca y endereza, que la guagua va en reversa! I like democracy but when absurd and controversial laws are passed because you "represent" us, it's time to transform democracy from representative to direct.
Classical Liberalism - I aim to carry on your legacy, but laissez-faire is quite harmful to consumers and small businesses. Also, Necessary regulations must be strictly applied.
Third Way - I can't argue with centrist economics, but you've also picked up some of the worst of
Neoliberalism and
Neoconservatism.
Geolibertarianism - Whilst Georgism and liberty is all well and good, you won't be able to ensure egalitarianism without welfare and regulation.
Social Georgism - We have a lot in common, other than minor disagreements over policy priorities. Just ditch that unnecessary bureaucracy and we are perfect.
Tridemism - While I don't like your authoritarian and nationalist tendencies,
Social Georgism is based. Also, FREE TAIWAN! Although I prefer
DPP to
KMT.
Democratic Party - I might've left you to become independent and form the Forward Party, but we're still friends, right?
Acid Communism - Jarow likes you. However, I don't agree with your communism.
Enemies
Authoritarianism - I'm against your authority. Individual freedom and rights are above all else.
Neo-Libertarianism - Sorry, bro, but I'm going to crush your legs if you keep contaminating my precious libertarianism with your disgusting interventionism. Go away with those
morons
and leave us alone.
Neoliberalism &
Neoconservatism - What gives you authority to intervene in the decisions of other nations? Also, You have only replaced welfare with military expenses, but you haven't improved the people's life. Not to mention that the latter does surveillance in America.
Welfare Chauvinism - I don't care if you support welfare, you're just too racialist.
Hoppeanism - Do you really think "Physically Removal" is freedom? You're just a pseudo-libertarian who doesn't care about freedom.
Paternalistic Conservatism - The state and the people aren't parent-child guardianship. Rather, the people make up the state. I never favor your hierarchy, statistic interventionism or cultural conservatism. Say again, individual freedom and rights are above all else.
State Capitalism - The worst version of capitalism! This is just nightmarish, no protection for workers yet no freedom of businesses. Monstrous.
National Bolshevism - Not that gang! You're the opposite of me. Andrew Yang is Nazbol Gang!
Dengism - Yang isn't a Chinese spy! He's Taiwanese! Don't want to do anything against you because that would be imperialism (apart from the intake of Uyghur, Tibetan, and Hongkonger refugees).
Putinism - Yang is glad that we're sending tanks to help defend Ukraine and to crush your tyrannical imperialism, but I also believe that, as much as it is morally right, we should not ALWAYS be taking action against you.
Ochlocracy - Too many crooks spoil the democratic system!
Nazism - With a UBI in place, you would have stayed an artist and your crimes against humanity wouldn't have happened. Cope harder you actual Nazi.
Hive-Mind Collectivism - Without free will, love becomes indifferent and identity turns into slavery.
Ba'athism - Authoritarianism? War Crimes? Ethnocentric? Autocratic? We may oppose military interventions against you, but still... You're everything I stand against!
