'''Demarchy''', also known as '''Sortition''' or '''Stochocracy''', is a political system where leaders are chosen at random from a pool of candidates. It was originally used in Ancient Athens before being replaced by [[File: dem.png]] [[Democracy]]. In the modern age, demarchy is mostly limited to jury duty.▼

quote="Demarchic bodies would be much less responsive to vested interests. Any given individual would have a limited term of office, and would have less to gain from serving a special interest. Political machines would not be able to groom loyal candidates for office because, with random selection, no one knows who will be chosen."

Athenian democracy developed in the 6th century BC from what was then called isonomy (equality of law and political rights). Sorting was then the main way to achieve this justice. It was used to select a majority of the magistrates for their steering committees and for their juries. In Athens, in order to be eligible to be selected by lot, citizens independently selected themselves into an available pool, and then conducted lotteries in kleroteria vending machines. Magistrates appointed by lot, as a rule, had a term of service of one year. A citizen could not hold any particular position more than once in his life, but could hold other positions. All male citizens over the age of 30 who were not disenfranchised by atimia were eligible to participate. Those who were chosen by lot passed a check called a docimacy to avoid incompetent officials. The magistrates, as soon as they were appointed, were constantly monitored by the Assembly. Magistrates appointed by lot had to report on their tenure of office after a leave of absence called eutinai. However, any citizen can demand the removal of a magistrate from office for a good reason.
