In 1971, Matthew Israel founded the Judge Rotenburg Center to “treat” autistic children who couldn’t retaliate against what was going to be done to them. He based his “treatments” on Skinnerian psychology. The basic idea of Skinnerian psychology is that animals (not humans) will strengthen a behavior in response to different operant conditioning. Over the next 50 years or so, many autistic children were tortured to death.
