He came to power after the 1976 coup d'état, overthrowing María Estela Martínez de Perón, participating in Operation Condor, and initiating the National Reorganization Process. He left power after ceding it to Roberto Eduardo Viola, later being arrested after the National Reorganization Process, dying of cardiorespiratory arrest in 2013, in which before his death, he justified state terrorism and did not regret his crimes.
