Social Libertarians would ideally be inclined to use a Social-Market economic system which combines a free-market capitalist economic system alongside social policies and enough regulation to establish both fair competition within the market and generally a welfare state. Furthermore, this economic system would allow things such as private property, free foreign trade, exchange offree goodsmarket, market competition, mild to moderate economic interventionism, and freea formation ofwelfare pricesstate. Most Social Libertarians agree that a suitable taxation method to fund the welfare state would be Land Value Taxation , Government revenues from public enterprises and even in some instances Value Added Taxation.

The most well known welfare policies that Social Libertarians all advocate for is universal basic income or a negative income tax, however some more left-leaning variants would advocate for a more robust system intertwining Single Payer Healthcare or Universal Catastrophic Coverage, Free Public Education and in some instances paid-for social housing. The aim of the Welfare state or social-safety nets is not to subsidise complacency as most Libertarians would put it, but to ensure everyone has an equal starting line when participating in the competitive free market which is prone to contain inequalities and dominion over the individual which violates a person's individual liberty and disallows fair competition.

Social Libertarians believe that Negative liberty and Positive liberty are equally important; through this philosophy an ideal Social Libertarian government should provide basic necessities to guard people from domination whether that would be from Poverty or damages to the Environment. This would be done through implementing regulations which would prevent corporations from violating a persons liberty and protecting them from unfair domination, however regulations which if were not present would not violate a persons individual liberty are deemed unnecessary.

As in the name, Social Libertarians advocate for a decentralised small government which minimally interferes or does not at all interfere with the lives of a person outside of welfare and social safety nets. Furthermore Social Libertarians support Direct Democracy or in some instances Semi-Direct Democracy, this system maximises freedoms & liberties whilst keeping state power and bureaucracy to a minimal. Most Social Libertarians argue that an ideal Social Libertarian government would be closely structured to the Helvetic Model
