Critics claim that examples of Homonationalism include the United States' modern insistence on global gay rights being used to justify foreign intervention, or Israel's acceptance of gay marriage being used to legitimize their claim over Palestine. These statements are known as ''Pinkwashing'' in LGBT studies, as they use issues of LGBT rights to distract from violence or nationalist sentiments. Homonationalism was not originally an ideology, but rather a critique of certain LGBT ideas. That being said, people who hold nationalist views associated with LGBT rights may be described as Homonationalists.
