I think it’s mostly because that “cult” is one of the worst labels out there, and it has been used against Falun Gong in the persecution in China. So many people that don’t agree with Falun Gong’s beliefs (like anti-communism and reactionary views) tend to put that label on.

Partially the reason why organized religion gets a bad reputation. It’s okay to practice religion, but it’s NOT okay to use religion for harmful or destructive purposes.
