A Theocracy is a system of government in which a deity is seen as the supreme civil ruler who gives religious and divine guidance to politicians, including the head of state. In most theocracies, religious law determines national law and religious dissent, including secularism, is banned or restricted. Autocracy and authoritarianism is also common.

Different theocracies include:

  • Autotheism - A term used for states where the head of state is worshiped as a deity, common within cult of personalities.
  • Buddhist Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Buddhism and it's sects, mainly in regions in East Asia and Southeast Asia, prominently Tibet and Bhutan.
  • Chinese Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Chinese Folk religions, mainly in Hong Kong, Taiwan and small groups in China, apart from overseas Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia[1], mainly in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
  • Christian Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Christianity in general.
    • Catholic Theocracy - A form of Christian Theocracy centered around Catholicism.
    • Orthodox Theocracy - A form of Christian Theocracy centered around Orthodoxy, currently significant in Eastern Europe especially Greece, Russia and Ukraine.
    • Positive Christianity - A fusion of Christian theocracy with a fascist or Nazi government.
    • Protestant Theocracy - A form of Christian Theocracy centered around Protestant denominations such as Anglicanism, Presbyterianism, Calvinism, Lutheranism, Methodism, and many others.
    • State Oriental Orthodoxy - A form of Christian Theocracy centered around Oriental Orthodoxy, mainly in Ethiopia.
  • Hindu Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Hinduism, mainly in India.
    • Hindutva - A form of Hindu Theocracy that combines Nationalism and far-right politics, including Fascism, which is significant in Indian politics
  • Islamic Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Islam in general, mostly Sunni Islam.
    • Shia Theocracy - A form of Islamic Theocracy centered around Shia Islam, mainly in Iran.
  • Jewish Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Judaism, mainly in Israel.
  • Pagan Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Paganism and its many variations, mainly in non-Abrahamic places.
  • Satanic Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around theistic Satanism and its many denominations.
  • Sikh Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Sikhism and its sects, mainly found in the region of Punjab, which is a state that is both in Pakistan and India.
  • State Shinto - A form of theocracy centered around Shintoism, prominently in Japan.
  • Zoroastrian Theocracy - A form of theocracy centered around Zoroastrianism. It was prominent in Persia before the introduction of Islam.

Other ideologies often described as theocracies include:

  • Religious Anarchism - A term used for anarchist ideologies with a basis in religion. While not officially considered theocratic, some religious anarchists may consider their ideology to be an “anarcho-theocracy” in a more literal sense. This is because they believe in following a god or gods or a religious philosophy rather than the state.
  • State Atheism (Debatably, accused) - Often called as a theocracy of irreligion because of its similar function to the religious theocracies it opposes.
