Presidents of DRD

Diplomatic Relations

  • Canadian People's Republic - After CPR supported DRD independence relations came to a standstill due to trade with AmFed. When Kashtan came to power in the CPR relations would improve.
  • People's Commonwealth of Columbia - Tensions Would remain high, especially after Chairman Libra's statement calling the DRD a "bourgeois government" that "collaborates with the western imperialists in the name of socialism, while denouncing all proletarian states of the world."
  • The American Federation - Relations would be relatively friendly with mutual respect and during the AmFed intervention in the Deseret Civil War the DRD would support them with supplies mostly medical aid.

Lore
1950s|The Begining

Many in Maine, New Hampshire, East Vermont, and Northern Massachusetts had become more progressive than their fellow Americans and with encouragement from the local Wabanaki native community had begun to want independence from what they saw as a crumbling imperial capitalist America. In 1958 during the Second American Civil War, the territories would hold a referendum and vote to become independent and so the Democratic Republic of Dawnland was created. The Five states in the republic would be Wabanaki, Maine, New Hampshire, East Vermont, and Northern Massachusetts. Canada and The American Federation would support Dawnland's independence. After independence, the 5 states and their 37 counties went about electing Representatives with one being The influential progressive leader Arthur McCormack. There would be a constitutional convention in which the reps would set up a system similar to the American system except with an Economic Bill of Rights and constitutional supports for cooperatives, unions, and economic regulation and without an electoral college and Laws blocking lobbying and the ability of people to recall representatives and vote on certain legislation directly. The first presidential election would be held and Arthur McCormack would win almost unopposed. During the first 2 years of his presidency laws funding cooperatives would be passed, bolstering the economy. Trade would be opened with the American Federation causing Canada to have tense relations with the DRD but Canada would continue to have an ambassador in the capital Portland.

1960-1970|A Rocky But Prosperous Start

The DRD would remain neutral diplomatically. The DRD would prosper with cooperatives moving the economy forward, reviving Wabanaki art and culture, and expanding civil rights and liberties. Underground a Maoist organization would grow and start organizing. McCormack would be wildly popular during his presidency because of the relative prosperity in the DRD under his watch. He would win his reelections and serve 2 full 6-year terms before stepping down in 1970.

1970-1972|The Hiccup

In the 1970 election, the new Liberal Dawn Parties candidate Randall Nadeau would become president. He would take a moderate "common sense" approach to problems and this would cause what many Dawnlanders now call the hiccup. The hiccup would be a 2 year period where Nadeau would undo the "Radical" parts of McCormack's economic policy and cause some economic stagnation. This would add fuel to the Maoist flame and during the hiccup the Maoists would gain enough numbers to carry out terrorist strikes on government buildings and city centers. On top of that many unions would organize strikes and The Wabanaki Peoples Party Along with the Progressive Movement for Equality would gain popularity. Nadeau would respond poorly to the situation and after only 2 years in office would be recalled by popular vote and an emergency election would take place in which the WPP and PME would put forward a joint candidate, Strong Tree, who would run against a Liberal candidate and win.

1972-1984|Rejuvenation

Strong Tree would bring back McCormack's policies with an emphasis on indigenous interests and equality. He would reorganize the military into a more guerilla force to corral and push Maoist terrorists into their holdout at Washington Mountain and would besiege the hold rather than attempting to attack instantly stopping the terror and putting the conflict on standstill. Then he would create forest reserves, protect sacred Wabanaki lands, and create a department for both The Department of Sacred and Ecological Lands. President Strong Tree would oversee the construction of a comprehensive public transit system, national health service, and public housing initiative. This would lead to a rejuvenation of the nation and general well-being. in 1984 He would step down as president and continued to make appearances to make speeches sometimes with the now elderly McCormack.

1984-1990|Buisness as usual

In the next election, the WPP/PME joint candidate, Joseph Brennan who would run on continuing the Strong Tree policy and maintaining prosperity he would run against a fiery new liberal candidate, Michael Pymm whose platform advocated closer ties to the AmFed and more war-hawkish views coining the term Raging Liberalism. Brennan would win by a slim margin and would continue Strong Tree's economic policy and would maintain a stalemate with the Maoists at Washington mountain. He would also be in support of the Cherokee Revolution. He would run for reelection and lose to Pymm a radical candidate of the liberal party.

1990-1996|Raging Liberalism

Upon taking office he would denounce The PCC, The PRC, The AmFed, The USSR, and The USA. And would spend much of his presidency trying to get the votes to go to war but never getting the votes in the parliament. he would coin a term for his views "Raging Liberalism" combining a Third Way approach economically and a neoconservative approach to civics and diplomacy. He would vocally support many revolts against the USSR but not get the votes for military intervention. after diplomatic condemnation by most world powers, and economic stagnation because of his moderate economics, he would lose popularity and the liberal party would decline giving rise to the Marxian Dawnlander Party (MDP). In Pymm's reelection, he would run against the rising Marxist star Di Ozark and lose ending the brief era of Raging Liberalism.

1996-2002|Repairing

Ozark would immediately undo the right-leaning reforms and attempt to repair the foreign policy that Pymm had destroyed. She would attempt to institute more planning into the economy as well as nationalize parts of cooperative industry. She would also in the late years of her term speak fondly of the CPR and made many Dawnlanders nervous of her sympathies for authoritarian communist powers. So in her bid for reelection, the Marxist party lost substantial support in congress and the Wabanaki-Progressive party alliance would become the most robust coalition in government, Ana Tree the daughter of one of the most popular leaders of Dawnland Strong Tree, would win the presidency.

2002-2018|Rejuvenation 2.0

Ana Tree would solidify a strong welfare state and bring Dawnland back to a neutral diplomatic position. She would also negotiate a deal with the Maoist guerrillas, the agreement reached would make it so the maoists would stop their militias behavior and reform into a proper party with the ability to run in elections. The Maoists would agree and form the Communist party of Dawnland and would compete in the following elections, this pacification and securing of Dawnland boosted Ana Tree’s popularity. Many changes made by Ana Tree were widely popular and her government would win a second term. She would affirm woman's rights as well as help build a mostly self-sufficient economy with subsidies for tech science and agriculture. She would also start an economic program that would make Dawnland not only energy independent but also 100% green by 2020 (Similar to the real-life Green New Deal). She would leave office after her last term with an amazing track record and an amazing popularity percentage among citizens.

2018-Present|Democracy's DLC

In the elections of 2018, The Wabanaki-Progressive alliance with their firey populist candidate Franklin Keeler would win in a landslide. Keeler ran on a platform of putting large business owners in Dawnland in their place and that he would not only reinforce the Ana Tree welfare state but codify Workplace Democracy in the Dawnlandian Constitution. In the first year, the Keeler administration would write up and get passed the Dawnlander Democratic Expansion Act, this act would institute tax credits for Cooperatives to incentivize their creation as well as private businesses being required to have between 50%-75% worker elected board representation to keep business democratic and accountable. He would continue to institute Progressive Populist policies to this day but would also oversee the reaching of the ecological goal of green energy by 2020.

Ethnically I am for the most part Celtic (With a wee bit of English, and Québécois sprinkled in), specifically my family has roots in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales and culturally I am a mix of Canadian Gaelic Diaspora and American Welsh and Danish Diaspora. I also take a lot of inspiration and influence from thinkers like Keir Hardie, John Maclean, James Connolly, and Robert Owen as well as movements and parties like Plaid Cymru, Yes Scotland, and the Irish Republican Movement (Specifically the Provos and Sinn Féin). And I also practice a kind of loose Celtic Spirituality, I say loose because I'm not too big on the theological side, but I do enjoy and practice a bit of the spiritual side. This part of my ideology is more personal I'm not an ethnonationalist nor do I wish to impose Celtic culture on others, I just enjoy it for myself. :) Also in the words of Keir Hardie - “At heart, the Celtic people are all Communists ... with the love of the Welsh for Socialism one of their most well-known qualities.”
